Ginger Rogers was an American actress, dancer, and singer who had a career spanning five decades. She is best known for her role opposite Fred Astaire in the musical films of the 1930s and 1940s. Born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri, Rogers began her career as a dancer in vaudeville and on Broadway. She made her film debut in 1929 and went on to appear in over 70 films. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Kitty Foyle (1940). In addition to her acting career, Rogers was also a successful singer, recording several albums and singles. She was also a successful businesswoman, owning her own production company and a chain of dance schools. Ginger Rogers died in 1995 at the age of 83. She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Dance Hall of Fame in 1994.
